This one-day event will bring together researchers, publishers, policymakers and practitioners to explore the evolving landscape of open science, with a particular focus on its application in the social sciences.
Welcome and Keynote
From 10:00 to 11:00, Professor Joe Deville, Professor in Science and Technology Studies at Lancaster University and Managing Director of the Open Book Collective, will deliver the keynote address. His talk, Doing Open Social Science: A Researcher-Practitioner Perspective, will reflect on his dual role as a social scientist and a practitioner involved in developing new open publishing infrastructures. Professor Deville will share insights from his work with the Copim projects, which aim to create a fairer ecosystem for open access books.
The session will be chaired by Niamh Tumelty, Director of LSE Library and Managing Director of LSE Press.
Open Science Perspectives: Panel Discussion
From 11:00 - 12:30, a panel of experts will discuss Open Science Perspectives. The panel will include:
- Becky Hill, Head of Open Research at Taylor & Francis
- Anna Anetta Janowska, Assistant Professor at SGH Warsaw School of Economics and Deputy Director of the Center for Research Support and Open Science
- Ross Mounce, Director of Open Access Programmes at Arcadia
The panel will be chaired by Dr Matteo M Galizzi, Associate Professor of Behavioural Science and co-Director of the LSE Behavioural Lab.
Open Science in Practice and Policy: Lightning Talks
From 13:00 - 15:00, a series of lightning talks will highlight practical applications and policy considerations in open science. Speakers include:
- Dr Iryna Degtyarova on aligning research policies in the European Union
- Natalia Kirsanova on open science, governance and energy justice in the Global South
- Jieun Jeong on the Center for Socio-Political Data as an actor of open science
- Patricia Riba on signaling ethical data use in open science and AI
- Alokita Jha on climate and nutrition research through open science
- Dr Katja Mayer on the politics of openness in times of AI capture
This session will be chaired by Professor Elizabeth Stokoe, Professor in the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science at LSE.
How Can Wikipedia Enhance Open Science Practices?
From 15:30 - 16:00, Adam Harangozó, Wikimedian in Residence and Research Visibility Champion at LSE, will explore how Wikipedia and open science can work together to enhance research visibility and accessibility.
Doing Open Social Science: Book Launch
From 16:00 - 17:00, the conference will host the launch of the book Doing Open Social Science: A Guide for Researchers. Authors Patrick Dunleavy, Tim Monteath, Hannah Boroudjou and Denisa Kostovicova will discuss the principles and practices of open social science, offering practical advice for researchers at every career stage. The session will be chaired by Professor Dame Sarah Worthington, Professor of Law at LSE and Chair of the Editorial Board for LSE Press.
