This practical online workshop will support you in developing an assertive communication style that helps you express your needs clearly and respectfully, without oversharing personal circumstances. The focus is on tools you can use immediately in everyday academic situations, rather than on language perfection or public speaking performance.

The event is organised by the Educational Outreach Office at Central European University (CEU) as part of the CIVICA for All initiative.

What to Expect:

  • An introduction to assertive communication and how it differs from passive or aggressive styles in academic contexts
  • A simple self-advocacy framework for use in emails, meetings, and classroom discussions
  • An exploration of how cultural norms and power dynamics influence communication within European universities
  • Interactive practice with realistic scenarios, such as requesting flexibility or setting boundaries in group projects

Why Attend:

  • Gain "ready-to-use" phrases and structures you can apply to your university life immediately
  • Learn to express your needs clearly and respectfully without feeling exposed or oversharing personal circumstances
  • Participate in a supportive, interactive environment adapted to diverse university cultures
  • Develop confidence in navigating academic situations beyond public speaking or language fluency

The workshop is interactive, supportive, and adapted to diverse university cultures. You decide what to share, and you are welcome to work with real or fictional examples.
