Multi-campus course: The Future of Europe

The Multicampus Course “The Future of Europe”, coordinated by Professor Carlo Altomonte (Bocconi) examines and critically explores the major challenges facing the future of Europe with particular emphasis on globalisation, democracy, innovation and digitalisation, climate change and the green transition as well as the dynamics characterising European Union policy responses in times of crisis.

On top of a series of live online lectures held in turns by instructors from the CIVICA alliance grouped in four thematic modules and integrated with local activities, the course spurs students to work in transnational teams to complete a capstone assignment: develop policy solutions to EU-relevant policy problems.

More than 520 students across the CIVICA alliance have benefitted from this cross-border interdisciplinary experience at the heart of EU policy challenges over the past four editions. The fifth edition (A.Y. 2025/2026, Fall Semester) starts in September 2025.

The Achille and Giulia Boroli Foundation is a private Italian foundation (active since 1998), whose mission is to raise awareness among young people around current issues in the European Union, fostering academic debate and disseminating findings to the general public.
The foundation awards every year, in close cooperation with a committee of professors coordinated by the Achille and Giulia Boroli Chair in European Studies at Bocconi, 3 monetary prizes to the teams delivering the best 3 Capstone Projects within the course.
To date, twelve teams of CIVICA students have been honored with the Boroli prize for their outstanding capstone project work, further highlighting and showcasing the tangible impact and collaborative spirit deeply rooted in Europe fostered by this innovative course.
