The CIVICA alliance is proud to announce the selection of eight innovative collaborative research projects across partner institutions following its fourth call for proposals.

Sonakshi Saha, along with Sofia Garcia Durrer and Maria Paula Pineros, master's students at the Hertie School, presented their research at LSE's annual interdisciplinary student research conference "Knowledge Beyond Boundaries", part of the LSE Festival 2024 “Power and Politics.”

This week, 80 bachelor students from the SSE, Bocconi, CEU, IE University, SNSPA, Sciences Po, SGH and LSE, will gather in London for this year’s European Week. The topic of this edition is "Migration in a Changing Europe".

18 CIVICA students from 13 countries simulated a crisis situation in the Arctic region. “Project Arctic: A simulation of climate-induced conflict in the Arctic Region” was offered by the IPLI Foundation, in collaboration with CIVICA. Students were paired up to represent different delegations in an interactive role play. They engaged in intense negotiations with other delegations, which culminated in an online simulation of an Arctic Council general meeting.

In a vibrant convergence of knowledge and ambition, the CIVICA Doctoral Conference 2023 recently unfolded from November 15 to 17 at Central European University in Vienna. Attendees, predominantly doctoral candidates and early-career researchers from across the CIVICA alliance, gathered for a comprehensive exploration into the intricacies of preparing for the academic job market.

Early-stage researcher Chloe Nibourel from SSE is delighted to have won the award for best research poster at the CIVICA Research Conference 2023. The second edition of the Forum of European University Alliances is set to kick off in Barcelona, Spain, on the 14th and 15th of September, drawing representatives from various university alliances, the European Commission, Member States, and students.

The third edition of the CIVICA Summer School was hosted in September 2023 at the European University Institute’s (EUI) Villa Salviati. The summer school offered an interdisciplinary debate on transnational democracy.

The new academic year has started at SSE and everyone at the school was delighted to welcome the new students during the past week. One of the highlights was the academic fair, which provided representatives of CIVICA the opportunity to get to know the incoming BSc-students early on.

This week, CIVICA launches this academic year’s joint and multicampus courses, continuing the alliance’s work towards a true European campus. The courses are one of CIVICA’s many transnational experiences enabling students to pursue academic paths beyond any one institutional or national context.

The second day of the 13th edition of The State of the Union, the flagship conference of the European University Institute (EUI), took place at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence on 5 May 2023. The conference brought together policymakers from across Europe in a high-level political dialogue with scholars and experts.

Marion Lieutaud is Research Fellow in Computational Social Science at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Thanks to the CIVICA Research Postdoctoral Mobility Scheme, she stayed for 3 months in the Sciences Po - CRIS laboratory.

Eman Atta Maan from Pakistan and François Praum from France formed the Bocconi team of students that won the futurEU competition 2023 with their policy proposal titled "The Climate Divide: Why the EU's Border Adjustment Mechanism Needs Rethinking for Developing Countries."

Sciences Po has been a founding member of CIVICA, the European alliance of universities on social sciences, since 2019. As such, Sciences Po employees take part in building connections with the nine other leading European partner universities so that the alliance can live up to our expectations and offer quality opportunities to students, professors and researchers.

On March 20 and 21, Central European University (CEU) hosted representatives from CIVICA universities to initiate the next phase of work together focused on service to society initiatives across the alliance.

What is the outlook for democracy in the twenty-first century? Teams from across CIVICA universities explore the challenges for democracies and the opportunities for democratic deepening. 

From October through December of 2022, EUI Max Weber postdoctoral fellow Gozde Kilic was embedded at CEU in Vienna as part of CIVICA’s postdoctoral mobility program, which offers postdoctoral researchers from across the alliance the opportunity to visit other CIVICA member institutions to advance their research.

The Hertie School master of public policy (MPP) student took part in a 2022 digital policy internship for first-generation students at Google.

In an online workshop held on 7 March 2023, a group of researchers presented their work on the CIVICA Research Project STEADFAST. Silvia Pianta, Visiting Fellow at the European University Institute’s Max Weber Programme, organised the event and gave a presentation on the role of food demand in climate change mitigation. The event was a joint effort between CIVICA members Bocconi University, Central European University, and the European University Institute (EUI).

The European University alliance CIVICA, to which the EUI belongs, announced in late 2022 the winners of funding after the latest call for collaborative research projects.

On 20 December 2022, a ceremony took place at the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) in Warsaw to sign a contract for a project aimed at supporting Ukrainian universities. The project is being led by SGH Warsaw School of Economics and involves all CIVICA partner universities and five Ukrainian universities. The project will be implemented from January to December 2023, with a budget of nearly 1 million PLN (213 000 EUR).

On January 9, Professor Sergei Guriev will present “Economics of Populism and Hybrid Regimes” hosted by Central European University’s (CEU) Department of Economics and Business with CIVICA at CEU's Vienna campus.

Télio Cravo is investigating the complex interplay between global mining, gold standards, and slavery. His research, and a CIVICA Research mobility scheme, has brought him from the EUI Max Weber Programme and the History Department, to the Centre for History at Sciences Po.

The Faculty of Public Administration, SNSPA, organised on 8 and 9 December 2022 the 10th edition of the Smart Cities International Conference entitled 'Accelerating innovation'. It was an open scientific meeting which brought together various experts in the field of Smart Cities.

The Stockholm School of Economics hosted the CIVICA Doctoral Conference from 30 November to 2 December 2022. The conference offered early-stage researchers from CIVICA institutions an opportunity to get involved in various feedback sessions, talks, and hands-on academic practice training workshops to prepare them for their academic job market.

The team of the research project “When the Law is Silent: Hate Crime Prosecution and Implicit Bias in Law Enforcement Agencies (SILAW)” – one of the winners of the CIVICA’s first call for collaborative research proposals – presented the preliminary results of research in Oxford last October.

CIVICA students have finalised a report evaluating the performance of the European Monetary Union since its creation. The initiative was co-led by Guillaume Marder (Sciences Po) and Rasmus Salén (SSE), two BA students who met during the first CIVICA European Week in 2021. The project was supported by Prof. David Domeij, Head of the Department of Economics at the Stockholm School of Economics, who provided academic guidance.

The CIVICA Cultural Event took place last 16-17 September in the framework of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Sciences Po in Paris. Workshops, roundtable discussions, live music and dance performances, along with refreshments and social activities were interspersed throughout the two-day event for CIVICA students, fellows and PhD researchers.

This month, on the occasion of Erasmus+ days, the university alliance CIVICA celebrates its three-year anniversary with the launch of the new phase and the official onboarding of its two new members: IE University (Spain) and SGH Warsaw School of Economics (Poland).

On September 1-2, the first CIVICA Research Conference took place at the Central European University’s campus in Budapest. The Laboratory for Coronavirus Crisis Research draws faculty from all eight departments at Bocconi and is the university’s broadest multi-disciplinary research initiative ever. It aims to understand the spread of the COVID-19 and analyse its numerous social, health care, financial and legal implications.

Alumni from the Hertie School and the CIVICA alliance are invited to apply for 25 stipends to a workshop on "The Future of Work: AI, Data Science and Digital Transformation" organised by the Hertie School in May, 2020. The stipends, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), also include a session on strengthening the CIVICA alliance.

On 10 February 2020, representatives of the universities in the CIVICA alliance got together at the European University Institute in Florence to discuss the creation of a common European space which enables early stage researchers to benefit from the expertise and the resources at partner universities and to collaborate across borders.

On 4-5 February 2020, the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA) in Bucharest, Romania hosted the first meeting of CIVICA's work package on international partnerships.

Following the first CIVICA Presidential Meeting held in Paris on 18 July 2019, the CIVICA Managing Team came together for the first time on 3 October 2019.

CIVICA has been selected by the European Commission as one of the pilot European Universities. A total of 48 applications were received, of which 17 have been selected and awarded funding, as announced on 26 June 2019 by the Commission. The application of CIVICA received 92/100 points.
