CIVICA Doctoral Conference 2021: How to Prepare Yourself for the Academic Job Market

This conference offers PhD researchers from the eight CIVICA member universities the opportunity to prepare themselves for the academic job market. It will include feedback sessions and hands-on academic practice training workshops for PhD candidates from any discipline who seek an academic career.  

Once the conference participants have been selected, they will have a chance to provide input about their particular interests. Depending on their preferences, we may include sessions and workshops on the following topics:

• How to write an effective CV
• How to craft a powerful cover letter
• How to develop an effective research proposal for postdoc applications
• How to give a persuasive presentation on your research in a job talk
• How to do job interviews
• How to get information on postdoc job opportunities worldwide
• How to publish journal articles
• How to publish your PhD dissertation as a book

All sessions and workshops will be run by experts and faculty members from the CIVICA partner institutions. The participants will have the chance to meet each other informally and to develop intra-CIVICA friendships in the beautiful setting of Florence.

Funding

Costs for accommodation and travel to and from Florence will be covered by the participants’ universities of origin according to CIVICA rules. There are no conference fees.

Eligibility

Doctoral researchers from any discipline at the eight CIVICA member universities who are in their penultimate or final year of the PhD at the time of the conference (December 2021) are eligible to apply.

Researchers who have completed a PhD at one of the eight CIVICA member universities within the past 12 months at the time of the conference (December 2021) are eligible too.

Conference venue

The conference will take place at the European University Institute, located on the outskirts of Florence in Tuscany, Italy.

Should the epidemiological conditions not permit on-site participation, the conference will be held remotely. Arrangements for a hybrid conference format are also foreseen for PhD researchers or speakers who cannot make it to the venue due to COVID-19 restrictions.
