The role of universities in addressing challenges to democracy: CIVICA on "Campus Europa" podcast
12-03-2021
In the "Campus Europa" podcast of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Christian Freudlsperger (Hertie School) reflects on democracy in crisis and CIVICA's work to address this topic.
“Democracy in Europe is facing major challenges. It is therefore crucial that universities also work together, act as places of social exchange, and encourage and enable their students to make an active civic contribution,” highlights the political scientist. He discusses current challenges to democracy and academic freedom in Europe and the world, zooming in on how these crucial topics are reflected on CIVICA's agenda in education, research and civic engagement.
Freudlsperger, who is a postdoctoral researcher at the Hertie School and research coordinator at the Jacques Delors Centre, co-taught in the fall 2020 semester with Florence Faucher of Sciences Po CIVICA's first joint master's course, on "Democracy in Crisis." In the podcast, he gives a detailed account of his experience teaching the course and is joined in conversation by student Neslihan Altun (Hertie School).
