The Euro and the future of European democracy

17-11-2020

The CIVICA Future of Europe lecture series organised by the Jacques Delors Centre at the Hertie School continues with a talk by Professor Vivien A. Schmidt.

What are possible and desirable scenarios for the future of the European Union? For the third installment in the Future of Europe lecture series, the Jacques Delors Centre at the Hertie School hosted Vivien A. Schmidt, Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration, Professor of International Relations, and Professor of Political Science at Boston University, for a lecture on "The Euro and the Future of European Democracy."

Organised in the context of CIVICA - The European University of Social Sciences, the series invites important scholars and intellectuals to share their vision and work on Europe.

In her presentation, Professor Schmidt analysed the deficiencies of Eurozone governance from a perspective of democratic theory, and explored ways to remedy the EU's problems of legitimacy, reinvigorate its national democracies, and rethink its future.

The presentation was moderated by Director of the Jacques Delors Centre, Markus Jachtenfuchs.

The CIVICA Future of Europe lecture series is financed by the German Academic Exchange Service.
